Proof Capped Bust Dimes were produced in extremely limited quanities, most likely to fill special orders placed by well-connected collectors in Philadelphia and/or other major Eastern cities. It is also likely that a few specimens were prepared for presentation to important personages who visited the Mint. As of August 2006, PCGS and NGC combined have certified only 25 proofs from the early (1809-1828) portion of the Capped Bust series. None of these coins are dated prior to 1820.
